from the Ambassador for Israel’s desk – August 19, 2015
Time is fast approaching for Jews around the World to come together in prayer and introspection. In less than a month we shall assemble in synagogues to welcome the New Year and bid farewell to the one that is about to end. Ten days later we shall reach the epicenter of our collective soul-searching during the commemoration of Yom Kippur.
As we do so, we shall find it difficult to overlook the challenges that have been recently placed at our doorstep. As a people of several millennia, once again we find ourselves facing the task of outsmarting the machinations of our enemies. Yes, unfortunately, despite our continuing aspirations for a celebration basked in joy and free of apprehension, our joyous holiday will be also marked by concern and alertness.
The Middle East is undergoing rapid changes. Countries in our immediate region as well as further away find their very existence threatened by extremist non-state actors. Reality in many countries has sucked middle ground away and people have to choose between two options, never knowing if the one they opted for means life or death. Further away looms the regime that has engraved upon its flag the destruction of my country. Indeed a neighborhood which would scare any sensitive person.
Yet, nations unlike families cannot pack up and leave. The nation of Israel has no intention of uprooting itself. For us, that piece of mostly arid and inhospitable land with its inclement weather is embedded in our collective DNA. Yes, we hold different and often opposing views on many issues that affect our lives and how we see our future. Nevertheless all of us are united in our determination to see that our state, our only national home remains on course. We are not going anywhere!
As we welcome the year 5776 we are determined to continue to ensure the security of Israel, while at the same time strive to elevate our Start-Up Nation to new heights in all fields of human endeavors. This is who we are and this is our mission.
To all our numerous friends from the top of the North Island to the remotest point in the South my message is of immense gratitude and appreciation. Your prayers and your thoughts; Your identification with the State of Israel and its people is a source of everlasting strength to all of us.
The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.
Shanna Tova- Happy and Healthy New Year.
